Chapter Eight

Chase was not in a good mood the next morning at the Atherton Global offices. He had been absolutely positive that Olivia would have been arrested by now. She should have been arrested immediately after Harley had been shot, but that hadn’t happened. When he’d asked the detective in charge about it, he’d been told the case wasn’t necessarily a cut-and-dried domestic one.

“We have to look at possible external motives,” was all Detective Vanasse would say, “given Mr. Atherton’s military business.”

The last thing Chase wanted was to have state police detectives scrutinizing their client records, which meant the sooner Olivia was charged with his murder the better.

When Edgar showed up at Chase’s door and said, “Got a minute?” Chase motioned him in.

“I do.”

The problem with Edgar, or rather one of the problems with Edgar, was that he thought he was smarter than Chase. He wasn’t. Chase was brilliant, and he knew it. On the other hand, Edgar was the best operations man in the organization, and hands-down, the best marksman, and Chase was about the worst. Chase just didn’t have that much interest in putting bullet holes in silhouettes. He thought it was boring and noisy.

Chase looked at the stack of paperwork Penelope had left on his desk. Harley had hardly given a thought to his own mortality; he had been too busy running Atherton Global. At least there was a will, a fifty-page will, but Harley hadn’t gotten around to developing a succession plan for the company or spend time grooming Chase to be in charge. And now all of a sudden, he was the new CEO running a big company with offices in five countries. Chase knew he could handle it, but unfortunately, he needed Edgar, since he knew more about the day-to-day operation of the company than anyone except Harley.

Edgar sat down in a chair across from Chase, staring at him with his usual steely gaze. “I need to take some time off. It’s been a while since I’ve taken any time, and I need a couple of weeks, or so.”

Chase noted that Edgar wasn’t asking him, he was telling him. The two men hadn’t spoken since Harley’s burial service at the cemetery. As they watched Harley’s casket lowered into the ground, Edgar had told Chase to send him Wallace’s files that he’d taken home, and Chase said he couldn’t, because he’d already shredded them.

He hadn’t. The files were in a file drawer in his home office, and Chase meant to go through them when he had time.

Chase looked at Edgar as he sat across from him in his office and said, “It would be better if you could wait two or three months to take time off. There are five annual contracts coming up for renewal, and one of them is the UAE’s, and I’ve got to replace the regional manager in the Ukraine, as well as the one in Kenya. It would be good if you could wait.”

“No, I need the time off now, for personal reasons.
